Nautical items are incredibly versatile, whether they’re knitted, sewn, crocheted or in paper craft. Blue and white breton-striped clothes evoke a sense of classic elegance on both men and women, children and adults. While equally sailing-themed items are universally popular in the home – with simple fish and boat motifs being a common sight (especially in people’s bathrooms!).
We’ve featured sailing-themed items in Knit & Stitch Creative magazine before, such as in Issue 5 where we included a blue-and-white striped jumper for children. This classic jumper can be personalised by double stitching a number on the top of the stripes. In Issue 15 we were equally inspired by the sea – and suggested adding blue ribbon bows to anchor-print pumps.
However, it’s in Issue 26 where we went go sailing frenzy. Sailing-themed images are perfect for appliqué – a centuries-old craft of applying fabric shapes to a background fabric. These motifs can be pinned, tacked, bonded in place or hand-stitched to an item. In the magazine we provide a pattern for a knitted book bag, and give ideas for adding simple sailing motifs to bags and tea towels. Click here for nautical templates to try them for yourself!
